A LEGACY OF GIVING

TREASURE
IN HEAVEN

THE HARTER FAMILY

“Give freely and become more wealthy…” – Proverbs 11:24

In an era when women in the U.S. had barely been given the right to vote, Vivian Harter Moody (1903 – 1979) earned a Master of Science in Education from Stanford University. She and her family were dynamic Christians who believed deeply in education and gave bountifully to missions. They made an enormous global impact which still thrives today through organizations like Ethnos 360 (formerly New Tribes Mission) which her sister and brother-in-law (Cherrill and Paul Fleming) founded in 1942 with generous financial backing from the Harter family.

Generations later, the Harters continue to “store treasures in heaven” (Matt. 6:20) through their impactful giving.

THE HART SPRING

As a name, “Hartwell” represents our mascot (the stag) and means “spring or stream frequented by deer.” The hart (or stag) has long been a sacred symbol of Christ.

“Hartwell” is also a nod to Vivian Harter, who was the loved and esteemed grandmother of Hartwell Education’s co-founder (Paul Snyder).

The Harter family originally hailed from Hart, Austria. There, a massive waterfall frequented by deer still abides.

Hartwell Quest® is a social enterprise with a mission to build pathways to a brighter future for students worldwide through innovative education on the foundations of timeless wisdom.
