James Armistead (1748 – 1830) was an American hero and spy for the War of Independence whose bravery and intelligence is said to have likely shortened the Revolutionary War by years.
While a slave in Virginia, he asked and was granted permission to join the military as a volunteer under the Marquis de Lafayette who commanded the French forces in alliance with the Continental Army.
After helping America gain independence from Britain, Armistead later gained his own freedom with the help of General Lafayette and adopted his name, becoming known as James Lafayette after his emancipation.
